Mentre si trova a Malacca, incontra con un uomo di nome Anjiro, un giapponese, che gli parla della sua terra. Due anni dopo, assieme a quell'uomo che ha preso il nome cristiano di Paolo, e ad altri compagni, si imbarca alla volta del Giappone. L'ultimo tratto sarà compiuto su una piccola giunca cinese. Il 15 agosto entrano nel porto di Kagoshima.
